| After that adventure in Havasupai, I could use a vacation...
Off to Hawaii for a week!
Let me know if you want a souvenir.
| | |
| I'm off for 3 days of camping/backpacking at Havasupai with the crazy white kids from school.

| WARNING:
Do not read the following entry if you wish to be productive. Do not
read it if you still have finals left or wish to pass your exams or
finish your papers. Do not read if you're trying to concentrate on
studying and are only taking a short "break". If you're prone to
wasting time and wish not to, the following entry is not for you.If,
however, you are trying desperately to not study, then do read on.
You have been warned.
This entry is dedicated to wasting time on the internet. It is finals
week for UCSD students. At my grad school it is midterm season. For
others, it may be the start of summer school. If you've access to a
computer at work, you're like this every day. At any rate, many people
are now desperately scouring the internet looking for distractions from
boring productivity.
Internet distractions generally fall into three categories:
Blogs and such, or "Online Voyeurism":
Now, these are the old standbys of checking blogs, facebook, myspace,
email, away messages, what have you every 15 minutes to see if
friends and strangers have updated in their own attempts to
procrastinate. Since if you're reading this, you obviously know
how to navigate these sites, so I will not bother posting url's here.
Media or "Yes, there's more out there than just porn":
Videos and pictures are always entertaining. They can come in short few
minute snippets of funny videos to whole episodes of television,
uploaded for your convenience. Popular sites for these are entensity,
youtube, or any of the bittorrent sites. These are also common
knowledge, so no need to post their url's.
Games and tests or "Just one more game of tetrinet":
Perhaps reading or staring isn't your thing. Perhaps more interaction
is your procrastination cup of tea. There are a myriad of sites that
will provide flash games and personality tests for you. Whether you
want to smash things or find out what kind of ice cream flavor you are,
Shockwave.com and okcupid.com are popular for these. A particularly
popular one is eyezmaze.com, where you can find the ever popular Tontie, or Grow! games.
Now, I've covered the basics, now on to the good stuff. Here's a list
of some of my favorite oldie but goodie's, as well as some new things
that may not have caught on.
For Quick entertainment:
http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/drum.php
- Drum Machine - an award winning flash video from a few years ago. Why I find it so entertaining I can't explain.
http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/showdown#start
- Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny - pretty recent, but too good to let die.
http://www.hcn.zaq.ne.jp/cabic508/rsf/frame1.html
- ... I can't even explain. Just watch.
More videos and pictures:
Youtube is great and all, because anyone can upload anything. It also
sucks, because anyone can upload anything. Most of the time, people
just aren't that funny.
http://www.break.com/
http://www.metacafe.com/
Two sites to which people can submit videos, the people that run the
site choose what THEY think is entertaining, and post them for your
perusal. There's also http://video.google.com/.
That's right. You can search for anything on google, and now you can
search for any video. It's sort of similar to youtube, without anyone
telling you how lame they think the video is.
.
I feel that I must issue a second warning here. What I'm going to
reveal next can go beyond "I'll just take a few minutes break to check
some websites".
Next, a new category:
Information, or "Bathroom reading, if you could bring your computer to the john with you"
This category of sites can bring hours of reading to your fingertips.
Reading that may be far more interesting than the wolf-krishner
reaction or supreme court rulings. Tread forth at your own peril.
http://www.wikipedia.org/ - You can search for anything here, and I
mean ANYTHING. Go ahead, try it. Complete history and information on
your favorite comic book characters, old tv shoes, movies, actors are
at your fingertips. Their articles even reference other articles in the
wikipedia database so further information is easy access. Go ahead, try
it. Say you're a fan of comic books. Type in "superman" and see what
happens. Or if you like tv, type in your favorite show, like "Lost".
http://mutanthigh.com/ - With the
recent release of the third Xmen movie, it seems appropriate to mention
this one. Regardless of what you may have felt about it, odds are if
you've got strong feelings one way or another, you're an Xmen fan. This
site is a complete database of everything Xmen. Reviews of recent
issues, character bios, etc. The person that runs the site is even
consulted when books about xmen are being written. Sure, you could find
the same thing on Wikipedia, but why run the risk of actually learning
something useful?
Ok, now I feel that I have to issue a 3rd and final warning. The link
I'm about to reveal is something I only just recently discovered, and
it kept me awake until 4am last night when I had a midterm at 9am. I
could barely tear myself away, and I didn't even begin to explore the
depths of its content. This could possibly cause you to fail your
finals. Scroll down if
you're brave enough to venture forth.
So, you decided to take the plunge into madness. Very well. Here it is:
http://www.retrojunk.com/
what is this you ask? This, my friend, is your childhood. All your fond
memories as a kid, put onto the internet. Commercials, tv show intro's,
articles, all nostalgic trips down the memory lane of the 70s, 80s, and
90s. Remember Golden Crisps? The Noid? The EZ Bake oven? Remember the
Disney Afternoon or the TGIF (not the restaurant) Lineup? Want to?
Don't believe me? Type in a tv show under their search box and bask in
the memories.
Better yet, I'll do it for you.
Those of you who are old enough to remember watching hours upon hours
of Nickelodeon, remember the adventures of the kids of Camp Anawanna?
http://www.retrojunk.com/details_tvshows/92-salute-your-shorts/
So maybe some of you are too young to remember that, or didn't have
cable, or did stuff like Little League when you could have spent it
parked in front of the TV. Here's something that's timeless:
http://www.retrojunk.com/details_tvshows/10-transformers/410/#intro
Now go forth, and Procrastinate!
